The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) took place July 17–20 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center (850 Bocheng Road, Pudong New Area).

 

As one of the world's most influential annual AI summits, WAIC brings together leading global scholars, industry leaders, and innovative enterprises to showcase cutting-edge AI breakthroughs and industrial implementation outcomes.

 

Matwings Technology returned to WAIC this year to present its latest advances in AI-driven protein R&D to a global audience, featuring its proprietary dialogue-driven protein R&D agent MatwingsVenus™ (Xiaowu™), and joined global AI peers in exploring the transformative potential of AI to reshape the life sciences.

01 Dual-booth presence with flagship MatwingsVenus™ showcase

At WAIC 2026, Matwings Technology provided a comprehensive demonstration of its self-developed dialogue-driven protein R&D agent MatwingsVenus™, with core exhibits hosted at primary booth H1-D122, plus a secondary satellite booth at H2-A310 displaying the same core technologies and achievements. The linked dual-booth setup delivered a full showcase of the company's cutting-edge intelligent biotech R&D capabilities.

MatwingsVenus™ is an agent-centric, dialogue-driven protein design platform. Users simply submit functional requirements via natural language, and the AI completes sequence design, then automatically connects to automated laboratories where robotic systems execute key experimental steps including sample preparation, protein purification, and functional characterization. Experimental results are fed back to the AI for efficient multi-round iterative optimization, enabling fully intelligent, end-to-end "conversational dry-wet closed-loop" R&D.

 

This capability is built on Matwings' uniquely differentiated 10-billion-entry annotated protein sequence dataset — the largest of its kind in the industry — and the universal protein design foundation model trained on this dataset. Using the foundation model as its core engine, MatwingsVenus™ integrates research agents and automated experimental equipment to cover the full R&D pipeline: from market, literature, and patent research, to molecular design, small-scale validation, pilot process optimization, all the way to full production scale-up. This means users no longer need to switch repeatedly between disjointed tools: a single access point on MatwingsVenus™ supports the entire R&D workflow.

 

On-site demonstrations also included real-world ecosystem use cases powered by MatwingsVenus™ across sectors including biopharmaceuticals, bioprocess materials, circular economy, and health & wellness. Visitors witnessed first-hand how AI pushes beyond the cognitive boundaries of human experts, enabling faster, more efficient development of a wide range of biological products built on proteins as the core "underlying chip" of biology. We welcomed visitors to experience the platform first-hand and explore the full possibilities of intelligent biological R&D.

Speaker:

Tan Yang, Research Scientist, Matwings Technology AI Lab 

Tan Yang is the lead developer of the dialogue-driven protein R&D agent MatwingsVenus™. He was selected for the 2025 China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) Young Talent Doctoral Training Program, and has received more than 20 provincial/ministerial-level and above awards including multiple National Scholarships. He has published 13 papers as first or co-first author at top conferences and journals including NeurIPS, ICLR, and eLife, with 26 total publications and over 600 citations. He serves as a reviewer for venues including Nature Machine Intelligence, ICML, and ICLR. His research outputs rank first on the Harvard Medical School ProteinGym protein engineering benchmark; his open-source models and datasets have accumulated over 300,000 downloads on Hugging Face. He also contributed to development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Venus series large models and the Zhaoyan large model of the Shanghai-Chongqing Artificial Intelligence Research Institute.

02 Registration reminder

WAIC 2026 audience registration closed July 10 via the official conference app Hi WAIC. Registered tickets granted access to all three WAIC venue clusters: the Pudong World Expo zone (World Expo Center, World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center), Pudong Zhangjiang zone (Zhangjiang Science Hall), and Xuhui West Bund zone (West Bund International Convention and Exhibition Center).
